The Artist
Raja is a social activist and displaced artist, who seeks to revive the musical heritage of Syria’s regions with a choir of 20 female refugees and professional musicians in South Turkey.
The Work
The subsequent film, Roots, celebrates the diversity of Syrian communities. A group of female refugees from different backgrounds come together and sing popular songs from different regions of Syria, in Kurdish, Syriac, Turkmen, Armenian, Circassian and Aramaic. In addition, the women share their experiences with each other, fostering a sense of cultural inclusiveness.
